Video Pick & Dreamer Profile: Charice Performs “Note to God” on Oprah
Talk about dreams come true! 17-year-old singer Charice Pempengco recently blew away the audience of the Oprah Winfrey Show, and the world, with the performance of her first single “Note to God.” The performance was part of Oprah’s Talented Kids series finale.
Renowned songwriter Diane Warren, who wrote the song said “I thought that would be the perfect song, and you did way beyond what I had hoped for.”
Oprah told Charice, “You are a force to be reckoned with. That voice comes from something bigger than yourself. You’re pulling it up out of some place deeper than your little body.”

Charice also has a role on the upcoming Alvin and the Chipmunks movie coming out on December 25, 2009.
Charice truly reminds us that dreams really can come true! See more facts about the young singer below.
For more about Charice, check out some facts below about how she got her start:
Dreamer Profile: Charice Pempengco
Charice began getting exposure through videos of herself singing on YouTube, gaining up to 13 million hits! Born and raised in the Philippines, Charice was discovered at age 4 when her mother, a singer herself, noticed her daughter’s loud, rather enthusiastic version of “Happy Birthday” and decided to teach her proper vocal technique. By age 7, Charice was competing in local contests and belting out songs by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. In 2007, a web-savvy fan began posting a series of Charice’s performances on YouTube. These included her performances of “I Will Always Love You” and “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” from the “Dreamgirls” soundtrack – both of which were broadcast on the Filipino talent show Little Big Star. That led to a performance on the popular South Korean talent show Star King. Once that appeared on YouTube, she became an authentic internet sensation. Charice soon attracted the attention of American TV shows and appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Several months later, she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show bringing Oprah and the audience to tears when she sang. Charice has performed alongside such stars as Michael Bublé, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Katharine McPhee and Josh Groban. After singing with Celine Dion at her Madison Square Garden show in New York City, Charice confessed, “It was a dream come true. She’s my idol. I felt like the luckiest kid in the world.” What’s next for Charice? “I want to sing AND dance with Justin Timberlake,” she laughs, speaking of how she would like to branch into different genres such as pop.

Sweet Eggs and Ham: Creative Dr. Seuss Inspired Cakes
I’m in love with the Food Network, especially their cake-making competitions. The cakes their bakers/artists make are so whimsical and detailed. Here’s a video I found of a Dr. Seuss Cake Challenge. I love watching them work, and wonder how all that can be edible?
- “You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”
- “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”
- “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
- “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.
- “Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the things you can think up if only you try!”
- And here are even more quotes

Write On!: National Novel Writing Month & Writing Tips
November 1st kicks off National Novel Writing Month, when people all over the world will take part in penning their own books. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30. The website encourages the participants to just get writing and not worry about mistakes or scrutiny: “It’s all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.”
The site is really interactive in that you can discuss your progress with others, and at the end you’ll paste your story into the site’s word counter for it to verify that you’ve reached the 50,000 word mark. The power of deadlines and having others sharing the same experience makes the journey more energizing.
I decided a few weeks ago to sign up for the challenge, though the thought of it makes me a little nervous whether I can complete it on time. It’s been my dream since I’ve been a little girl to write novels, so whatever the outcome, this will help propel me in the direction of getting my dreams out on paper; to just do it.
If you’ve always wanted to write a book, I encourage you to try it out as well. What could it hurt to take a little time to nurture a dream. Go to the website to learn more, sign up, and get tips and encouragement from the forums. I’ll let you know how I do.
Here are some writing tips that inspire me from some of my favorite authors:
“Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.” – C. S. Lewis (Author of The Chronicles of Narnia Series)
“There is enormous value in listening and reading and writing—and then putting your words away for weeks or months–and then returning to your work to polish it some more. Read the very best writing and understand why it is considered the best. Maybe you will do better, which is great, but try not to do worse.” – Sharon Creech (From Women on Writing Interview)
“The writer has to force himself to work. He has to make his own hours and if he doesn’t go to his desk at all there is nobody to scold him.” – Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach)
“If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, you must be the one to write it.” – Toni Morrison, (The Bluest Eye, Tar Baby)
